Critical Care: Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about our Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and policies.

ICU (Intensive Care Unit) is for patients who require constant, close monitoring and support from specialized equipment and medication. HDU (High Dependency Unit) is for patients who require more intensive observation, treatment, and nursing care than is possible in a general ward but slightly less than that in an ICU.

To ensure patient rest and safety, ICU visiting hours are restricted. Typically, visiting is allowed for brief periods in the morning and evening, limited to one or two immediate family members at a time. Please check with the ICU reception for specific timings.

We follow strict infection control protocols, including mandatory hand hygiene, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), regular sterilization of equipment, and isolation rooms for infectious patients. Visitors are also required to sanitize hands and wear gowns/shoe covers if necessary.

Our doctors provide a daily update to the primary family member during scheduled hours. For urgent matters, the ICU staff will contact the registered number immediately.

Alarms are normal in the ICU and come from monitoring equipment measuring vital signs like heart rate and oxygen levels. Most alarms are routine indicators, but they alert nurses to check the patient immediately if anything needs attention.

Patients are transferred from the ICU to a High Dependency Unit (HDU) or a ward when their condition stabilizes and they no longer require continuous intensive monitoring or life support.
