Acid reflux is caused when the lower esophageal sphincter muscle relaxes when it shouldn't, allowing stomach acid to flow back up into the esophagus. Triggers include spicy food, obesity, smoking, and pregnancy.

There is no specific test for IBS. Diagnosis is made by excluding other conditions through history taking, blood tests, and sometimes stool tests or colonoscopy, combined with characteristic symptoms.

Diet alone cannot cure ulcers, but avoiding spicy and acidic foods can reduce symptoms. Most ulcers are caused by H. pylori infection or NSAID use and require medication for cure.

You should see a doctor if your pain is severe, persistent, accompanied by vomiting, blood in stool, weight loss, or if over-the-counter medications aren't helping.
